New to offshore (nearshore) -oak island area. Tips and suggestions for helping my kids have a good time?

We go down to OI every year and take my bay boat. We always fish inshore and have a good time, but last year I ventured out the lockwood folly inlet and trolled with clark spoons for a little bit and then went and checked out the reef. Only fished for a few minutes but got the bug to go back. I want to take my 10 year old son and would love for him to catch something. Can anyone share some tips on catching something? We will be there from end of May through June 13th. I would like to catch something decent size but he would be excited catching anything. Any ideas? Would like to stay within sight of the island...heard something about the hot hole off caswell but know nothing about it. Thanks everyone!

if you just want action of any kind get some fresh shrimp and bottom rigs w/small hooks and go to the reef. pretty much guaranteed to catch something.

First rule: never force your son to fish when they want to quit.
Troll for Spanish, cast to Bluefish busting bait balls or just chum for Sharks.
Let him steer the boat, only go out in calm conditions.
Kids love casting jigs & retrieving to nothing, makes them feel like they're fishing.
Hook a fish & hand him the rod. Take a few pictures to share with family.
Get him to rinse off the rods & boat when you return.

Remember it's about spending time together.
Hope this helps....... ICM

Thanks! Any favorite local place you get fresh shrimp? Also, what’s your favorite bottom rig? Thanks again for all the help!
Clems Seafood. Im sure haag has it too and theres another place right beside food lion - cant think of the name. I usually go to clems so I can get one of the homemade key lime pies lol.

I just use a little double dropper rig I make out of whatever mono I have. Lots of videos on youtube. or just get them at dutchmans. Bottom Sweeper jigs work well also but they are expensive.

Cool thanks! I'll check clems out. And maybe their key lime as well!
let us know how you do. ill be coming in to town for a week about the time you are leaving.
Will do. I'm not sure if we will do any offshore...the inlet near our house (lockwood folly) is closed pretty much since they removed the navigational markers...so doubt we will make the trip up to cape fear or holden inlet to go out...but if we do, I'll let you know how it turns out. Very sad about the lockwood folly inlet....been having trouble for years!
its not too bad a ride to the river. if you go early you can be there fairly quick. its 12 miles from bluewater marina to the river. if you run 35 thats about 20 minutes.

I only fish oak island once a year. compared to the inshore fishing its worth it (to me) to hit the ocean.
I went out with a guide and fished offshore and caught some great false albacore. What a fun fish to catch!! And then this morning was the first chance I got to go out on my own. Only fished for an hour and a half so fished near the lf inlet...caught a few flounder, several lizard fish, a couple searobins, and some kind of weird perch. LOL not exactly what I was going after but kept it interesting :) Did see Miss Katie coming through the inlet; took a video, maybe I'll post it on youtube ha.
