North Carolina’s Custom Made Fritz Orr Canoe Paddles

Fritz Orr III is a four time national whitewater canoe champion who makes wooden paddles in Cedar Mountain, NC. He grew up near western North Carolina’s Camp Merrie-Woode. Later in life, he sometimes built and sold boats until he returned to his boyhood home and boatshop in 2007 to make the traditional boat paddles.

Since the early 1930's, the Orr family owned and directed two summer camps, where eager young campers learned to canoe. Camp is where Fritz developed his love for the sport of canoeing, which also encouraged his wood working, design and instructional skills. After a life of instructing, competing and enjoying a life on the water, Fritz draws from this expertise to hand craft wooden canoe paddles. Each wooden paddle embodies the spirit of simplicity, balance, and performance. Sculpting wood is a fulfilling trade that transforms a genuine pride into a heritage to be passed-on. As a master craftsman, Fritz combines the aesthetics of design and beauty into a lasting value of art and function.

Recently celebrated on the pages of Town&Country, Vogue, WNC, The Week, Fritz Orr Canoe brings a heritage of canoeing to life through hand crafted canoe paddles. Perfectly balanced, crafted of musical instrument grade exotic woods, black walnut, aspen, bird’s-eye maple, mahogany, purpleheart, and ebony, which have better tone, texture, and pattern than other woods.

On cable TV “Around Carolina” has featured him crafting his paddles. You can watch him on You Tube
