RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 7) - The deadline for nominations for the 2006 Governor's Conservation Achievement Awards is a fast-approaching Dec. 30.

The awards are the highest natural resource honors in the state, presented annually by the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Governor's office to recognize those who have exhibited an unwavering commitment to conservation.

"By recognizing, publicizing and honoring these conservation leaders - young and old, professional and volunteer - the North Carolina Wildlife Federation hopes to inspire everyone to take a more active role in protecting the natural resources of our state," said T. Edwards Nickens, chairman of the Governor's Conservation Achievement Awards Program.

Categories include Sportsman of the Year, Land Conservationist, Water Conservationist, Air Conservationist, Hunter Safety Education Instructor/Organization, Forest Conservationist, Legislator, Environmental Educator, Youth Conservationist, Business Conservationist, among others. Awards are presented at a gala in March, where recipients are presented a statuette and a certificate.
