Bass fishing is full of surprises! Didn't get a pic of the big ol snappin' turtle I hooked (that thing scared the beejesus outta me) but got one of this ugly sucker that bit the shaky head/lizard. Mountain Creek arm of Lake Norman, Thursday 7/23/15

Man, what a day huh? nothing's worse when you think you have a 10lb bass and you either pull up a big snapper or a big ol' catfish. I had the same thing happen with a bowfin the other day. Hey, still beats working!

Man, those bowfin can fight. They are some ornery suckers. I caught my first bowfin last spring and I was pretty taken aback by how crazy it was.

Like Forest Gump said, "life is like abox of chocolates". Never know what may hit your bug, lol.
I've caught a couple cats over the years on plastic worms while bass fishing... doesn't happen that often but it does happen. Biggest surprise I ever had with a shakey head and trick worm at Badin Lake was seeing the line move, setting the hook on a freight train that dove and dove and just didn't want to come boatside... thought I'd hooked a striper or something, but it turned out to be a 14 pound carp!

That's a hefty looking catfish.
Caught a 12 pound flathead at Tuckertown on a Carolina rigged lizard about ten years ago. I would have taken that today, Matt and I got the skunk at HPCL today..
I was at SW park yesterday for about 5 hours, Jerry, and I only caught 2. Slow day all over the Deep River I guess.
Yeah, Sam, it's called "Dog Days". But it will improve...
I caught a 40 lb blue cat on the James river July 4th weekend with a shakeyhead. Most of the catfish I catch are on plastics or crankbaits.
Wow! It must have been a tough day if Mr Condrey took the skunk at HPCL.

I caught a blue cat on topwater the other night at Shearon Harris, I didn't think that happened. Like Jerry said, I'll take it over a skunk or work any day.
Years ago I tried an all red small crankbait. Some cheapo from Dollar General. And I mean it was ALL red, bill and all tip to tip, with eyes glued on. Took it out to a creek intersection point on the Haw River and chucked it towards the middle and gave it short jerks and let it float back up as it went downstream. This was for bassin'... but... turns out that day a school of catfish had taken over that stretch of the river. I caught cats 1-5 lbs all day long. Probably 20-30 of them. And only cats, nothing else. It was odd but a lot of fun! It was late summer, but maybe the crawfish were in their red suits that time of year on the Haw, I don't know but that's my only guess.

pulled this craw out of a bass' mouth in the summer, in water not very far from the Haw, a few years back. Red and black anyone? [the fish swam away unharmed, just hungry]
