I have used tiny pinfish for bait and caught reds and trout. I catch little ones in my net once in awhile and also fish with a tiny hook on an ultralight and catch bait. I take a kitchen scissors and trim the sharp fin off the back.

If you are gonna give pinfish a try dont put them in the bucket with your other bait IE mullet or menhaden, they are mean little suckers and will start by eating the eyes and then picking until the bait is dead then they move on to the next

I use small ones all the time. They are one of my favorite flounder baits, and I have caught a few trout on them while flounder fishing. I don't cut any fins myself. I use small ones, and have no trouble with them eating anything in the livewell or bucket. A bigger one would do some damage I'm sure.
