Bank fishing a local public small lake around 4pm. My expectations were not too high, because the water was still muddy from the recent rains. To my surprise, they were biting. I was fishing lay-downs with a wacky-rigged black blue-flake blue-tail senko. My hook-up rate with the weedless wacky rig is not great... had five really good bites, but only two hooksets hit paydirt. One was my best of the year so far.

Heck yeah! I've still yet to fish a wacky rig a day in my life but heard a lot of good things and clearly they'll bite one ✊

Great fish! I have fished wacky rig quite a bit but never get any big girls on them only dinks!

I need to explore more lakes in Raleigh. Apart from Lynn and a few casts at Umstead I haven't fished many other places.

Hi RyK, same to you, nice fish on your other post. In my experience, the bigger (not huge) bass in the umstead lakes are holding really tight to lay-downs... really tight. What I like about the weedless wacky rig, and also the weightless texas rigged, senko is that you can almost cast on the timber, and let the worm fall down. I wish there were more lakes around Raleigh for bank fishing. This might be in my head, but at umstead I generally have better luck if I hike as far as possible away from the easy access spots.

Walking in umstead away from the big open areas will yield more fish since most folks won’t walk that far to explore all the various coves etc. the bass are smart they hang in those logs and lay down perfect cover to attack and great way to get away from a hookset!
