Shark Attacks

First, a shark bit a 13 year old girl at Ocean Isle last week. Then, a girl lost part of her arm to a shark yesterday, only to have a 16 year old boy lose his arm to a shark 90 minutes later. Sounds like Jaws..
Authorities are blaming spinner or blacktip sharks, but the bites on that body board look like a bull shark to me.

I had the family at North Topsail Beach Friday and Saturday and to be honest with you the conditions were ripe. Incomming tide had a filthy trough with little to no visibility. I can only imagine that a critter that smells better than it sees would prefer those hunting conditions.

That Boogie board shot is really crazy!! I agree the bite marks look like a Bull Shark...Blunt nose...Either way it was a big shark..

Jaws wasn't much on leaving survivors. You have to be honest with yourself. It's the ocean. As bad as I hate to see things like that happen, it's really our fault.

ABC news said that the attack with the boogie board was a four foot shark.

Sharks

Is chumming allowed at Oak Island? Could be part of the problem.

I am not sure I would go as far as to say its our fault but I agree it's their world and they play by a different set of rules.

If I go to the zoo and jump into an enclosure then get tore up then it's my fault. Almost the same concept. Just a different setting.

No way the first attacker was four feet. Judging from the bites on the board, it was a bull shark around five to six feet or more.

Schools just let out, we all know there are sharks out there and they come in pretty close. If you took a aerial photo of any beach along the crystal coast you would prob see sharks pretty close to swimmers. This weekend there was ALOT more swimmers in the water due to summer vacations starting. Sometimes lightning strikes twice, i've heard a lot of reports that the water was dirty that just ups the risk.

While I love being on the salt, I rarely ever go in the salt. Its the sharks home and I am potentially dinner. I feel sorry for those kids and wish them all the best in their recovery.

That's well over 100 miles away from Oak Island at Cape Lookout.

I smell what your stepping in. I feel in the zoo, you just put animal on the defensive in an enclosed area, bad on you. At the beach, in the water you are not the apex predator anymore and different rules apply. Odds are in your favor nothing will happen but most times I don't think the person was at fault (ie chumming the water, etc).

Prayers out to the kids and their families.

I know big bulls have gone up the Potomac as far as D.C. Anyone know about them heading inland in NC?

Rumor has it big bull sharks have been caught at new bern. Me and my wife spooked something huge several years ago in new bern while kayaking in about 2 feet of water.

Bull sharks frequent fresh water from what i understand. Have been spotted over a thousand miles up the Mississippi River. Movie Jaws was based on bull shark attack inland in New Jersey way back in the day.....love this site. First time posting. Wont be the last. Hate it for those kids, lives forever changed by a family vacation to the beach.
