On august 14th three of us went striper fishing on Smith Mountain Lake,We started in the black water area before you get to where the two rivers meet.west wind 5mph,water temp 78 water depth 85- 130 fish was caught around 20 foot range on chartreuse and white bucktails and one once spoons... picked up 3 one 26 inch other 2 21-24 them two went back. trooled up to roanoke river before getting another bite a 29 inch, caught at 20 ft on drop off with standing timber 172 ft water. trolled up to mouth of walton creek, hit a nice school there caught several more in the 26-28 inch range,them boat traffic got bad, and we had our limit so we called it a day.. would have had pics but my phone went for a swim in 90 fow...

I don't know if you know this or not. But here is a quote from the VDGIF website.

"Anglers should not release legal size striped bass during the summer months. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries encourages striped bass anglers to quit fishing after catching their limit in the months of June-September. Most of these fish released during the summer months will not survive!"

we only let 2 small ones go back. at SML water temp was 78. the 2 released was not stressed or hurt and cool water for this time of year when water temps in the mid 80s and higher thats when you have problems.also depends on the lake.

I imagine SML has some big stripers. I have caught some in the 6-10 lb range bass fishing. I was up there in October and watched some going after a big shad about 14" long, based on the boils and splashes, they had to be huge fish.

not uncommon to catch some 15-20 lbers in winter months live baiting.some other big fish in there also they stocked 3000 muskie in there also few years back,buddy of mine caught one last year 47 inches..now that would be a battle.......
