Taking a sermon seriously

4550 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  evoboy911
Back in the summer, our pastor preached a sermon in which he said that you can worship God without the trappings of religion. The next Sunday, I went out fishing at Shearon Harris on Sunday morning. When I next saw the minister, he told me he missed me that Sunday and was curious if I was OK. I assured him that all was well and that I had just taken his sermon to heart. I told him that I would rather sit in my kayak and think about God than sit in church thinking about fishing!

He was not amused.

Some have unique ways of thanking the maker for all that is good and beautifull.
I think HE liked fishermen better than preachers anyway!

Religion is where you find it. No place in the bible does it say it must be in a building just where people congregate.
The church is made up of believers coming together to worship God. That can be in a building or in a parking lot or on a boat. But it is important for believers to come together. I consider my personal worship time (whether on the water fishing or at home studying the Bible) an addition to my corporate worship time, but not a replacement for it. And I think life is about finding balance. :)

AMEN, brother! It's no surprise that Jesus hung out with fisherman!

If you will remember, Jesus was mentioned being by the sea many times. In one instance, Jesus even provided a guide service by telling the disciples to put their nets out on the right side of the boat with a result of too many fish to handle. One of my favorite passages mentions Jesus being on the shore of the lake when some of the diciples who were fishermen came in. As you will recall, Jesus was cooking and eating some fish. Suggests to me that maybe even our Savior was a fisherman!

My mother wrote me a poem when I wed and it talks of this subject and comparisons with Jesus. I'll try to find it and post it. We many times have told her to publish it.
Its probably not coincedence that the feeding of the multitudes was done with fish also.

PS Coach if I remember correctly it was 153 -0. Have you ever ran up a score like that?;)
Matthew 4:19
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
