Greetings
I am born and raised in the mountains of East Tennessee and have vacationed 2-3 times a year on Topsail Island since 2004. Now, thanks to the good lord above, my wife and I have property on the island and our own spot in Surf City.
I have fished for years in the canals and sound side, mostly bottom fishing and catching whatever happened to bite on cut shrimp. Now, I'm ready to move to the other side of the island and wet a hook in some blue water.
I've never surf fished or fished from the pier, either. Can someone tell me which would be the best place to start? I'd like to be interactive with my fishing instead of just throwing out cut bait and hoping something hungry comes along. My sound side fishing for pinfish, etc. I relate to pond bluegill fishing at home. I'm a pretty fair largemouth/smallmouth angler. Can you catch some Spanish or maybe pompano surf fishing with a Gotcha plug (they seem to be popular)?
I really don't care what I catch. I am purely catch and release sport fishing.
I am new to this, so any advice for where would be a good place to start when I next visit in October is appreciated.
