Check out the Tesla Electric car demo on Yahoo. 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds. faster than the 700 Hp Dodge in a quarter mile.
Some of the language used by the riders while riding with the Tesla driver isn't up to ncangler standards so I didn't leave a link.

Oh yea, just look at trains. The combustion engine on a train only powers the generators which in turn power the electric drive motors. They can be infinitely speed controlled so there is no wheel spin.
