Testing boat and fishing near Haywood County. (Considering Cedar Cliff)

Needing to test a 60/40 hp jet drive motor on my 16 ft aluminum boat on Thursday (10/9). Leaving from Asheville to drop off son at Grandma's house in Waynesville and will take boat from there to a lake. Thinking of Cedar Cliff. It seems closest to that area considering I have to pick him up on the way back to Asheville. Up for suggestions if there is a better lake option for convenience.

Wanting to fish while I'm out as well. Any recommendations for that Lake? Are there walleye or crappie there? Would love to target those. If not, I can hunt trout or bass. Just looking for what species are there and maybe some good spots or lure suggestions.

Thanks!

Bear Lake upstream would be better.

Much bigger.

There are crappie, bass and rainbow trout in Bear Lake.

I don't use the jet boat because I've been working on trying to get it to run! Bought motor and boat separate a couple years ago. Been a long time getting everything together because I haven't made time for it much. Motor did not have issues when I bought it (tested it on water and removed it off boat at boat ramp before paying for it).

Today it was the same story as it has been the last 2 times tried it on the water. It starts fine, idles great, but only seems to get about half the power it needs and can't plane out. Originally, I rebuilt entire lower jet unit. The motor is 1985 Mercury. Checked compression, spark plugs, fuel line as well. No idea what the issue is.

Back to After sluggishly motoring around on Cedar Cliff we stopped to fish. 5 casts later it started lightning. Sluggishly motored back to ramp in a torrential downpour. Waited an hour but it kept up. Put boat back on trailer and came home. DOUBLE WHAMMY! No good news for motor and no fishing.

At the end of my rope. Taking it to shop tomorrow. Any suggestions on a good mechanic?

At any rate, here are some pics. The boat with it original motor and the jet after mounting it.
