February is a good month to target Browns in Calderwood. They've spawned and hungry. They're a bit more reckless than average, I believe. About five Februarys back. I caught a 21.5", 5 pounder on the smallest size Berkley shad rap, size 2, near Slickrock Creek. I hooked a bigger one about 10 years ago. It was in the fall. I hooked in the lower lake. I was within sight of the dam when it escaped. It looked like it was 7-9 pounds when it came to the surface about 15 yards from the boat. It was brightly colored like a male getting ready for the spawn. It looked at the boat for a couple of seconds. Then it decided to dive. He pulled off about 5 seconds later. He hit a medium sized Rapala Countdown, gold minnow. It was on my first leadcore outfit. I was trolling via my electric motor. It was full stealth mode for that strike.
