Topwater Traitor. .....

5 am departure, towed my boat to the bay, high wind blowing out of the SW.
Making topwater fishing difficult, but not impossible.
Went looking for Tarpon, found an uncooperative Trout, that blow up twice without hooking up.
Tried subsurface, no luck. ( insert link to LINC tutorial video here........)

Ran to some calm water to get out of the wind.
Throwing topwater just got easier, 2 more blow ups from 2 different Reds.
Still no hook ups. Harold switched out to a spoon & hooks up.
That traitor, I'm personally taking away all his topwater lure.
Now it's No Tarpon, No Trout & No Reds for me.

Tried a few different creeks to get away from the blowing wind.
Still no topwater love.
Stop for lunch near a Trout spot, zero fish.

Make it to a flat, wind at our back, making for long out of the area code cast.
The kind where you can unload half a spool of 10# braid, down to the backing on a 2000 series reel.
Stop working my topwater to see what Harold doing.

I'm in!....... 24" Red with a mouthful of weeds.
Then my trolling motor quits working, wind picks up to almost gale force.
We have to crawl off the flat before it goes dry.

Get back to the ramp & some teenage is fishing across both ramps, in mud, for I don't know what.
With a two hook bottom rig. ( must have read that on some fishing site )

Saved my day & reputation for sticking with a topwater. ....... ICM

Question is....why aren't you down there now? I'm the same way with topwater. I'm addicted to the explosion, hit or miss. That and to lazy to change-up. Good post Billy. Ready for tomorrow minus the circus (hopefully).

Yep Harold should be fined for not being a devoted follower of the Topwater lure.

ICM- You should rest well knowing you were loyal to the cause!
Top water is my favorite also. Never fished a spoon much, and don't remember catching anything on them, but will give that another try, IF I can stop my top water addiction.
Great fishing on a tough day.

Neil, leaving a few for you & honey dos. Watch out for the "clown car " at the ramp........ ICM

Harold has a 15 minute "no fishing" penality added to our next trip & a strong verbal reprirmand coming. ...... ICM

Hey ICM. Meant to tell you that I fished with SteveF last week and that 7'0"medium Teramar and 3000 Battle setup you put me on handled a 25-30 lbs sandbar shark like a pro. The way that fish ran and fought, I thought for sure it would snap. But, she held strong in all her blazing blue glory!

Man up Curtis. Stop fishing like you're a novice, kids may be reading your comments.
Save that attitude for the over the counter guys that fish a 2 hook, styrofoam ball, bottom rig. ...... ICM

That's what I'm doing today and of course there's no wind.

That's what I've been trying to tell folks for years.
Have 7 Teramars. Trade with Harold for one, that was too heavy for Trout. Perfect for surf Reds.

If anyone has a broken one & don't want it I'll trade for it. ...... ICM
Glad you stuck with what you know how to fish Billy..... topwater baits you can see and jerk away from the feeding fish. But seems like at least one fish was more determined than you. hahaha

Have a great one.
"Go top or go home" . New t-shirt is what I say.
On the back a pic of a drum hanging from a mirrolure (red/white top dog of course).

Lost 2 chugger style topwaters to Sharks this morning in the surf.
Short length of 30# leader was no match.
Going back with wire leaders, larger reels with 30# / 50# braid & heavier rods. ....... ICM

Might be a spoonful of diamonds
Might be a spoon made of gold
Might catch a spoonful of redfish
It'll satisfy my Soul

Harold "Howlin Wolf" Burton!

Way to go Harold!

Thursday was my bday and it was "Howlin" at 230p when we launched too.
Threw TopWater till a quickly advancing storm chased us off the water about 6pm.
Nothin like a TopWater blow-up. But catching is fun too.
