Shopping for a used boat and seeing quite a few that have the title for the boat but not for the trailer.

From what I'm finding, getting a trailer registered in NC without a title is a giant pain (and can cost a few hundred $$). Am I correct?

Just go to dmv. Apply for a home built trailer. They’ll give you the paperwork and a vin# to stamp on the trailer. Have the vin stamped on the trailer where it says to. Then you get a Highway Patrolmen to check the vin and sign the paperwork. Then take the signed paperwork back to dmv and they’ll give you a tag and send the paperwork off. You’ll get a title in the mail.

If your community has a license and theft bureau they handle the VIN inspection, and make sure it meets legal requirements. They also look for other VINs or signs of removal, alteration. Gonna guess a factory boat trailer will draw significant scrutiny.

Friend went through the proper process, DMV will explain the process. He had to get some kinda bond for a period. I know with boats they give you the last known registered owners last known address, you send them a certified letter, if you're lucky they'll be alive, there, helpful and willing to do the lost title thing and sign it over to you.

I had to go the process in July 2017 when I moved to NC from TN. My 1999 boat trailer had a VIN located on the frame on a plastic card which was glued to the frame. It fell off during the move. itWhen I tried to register it at the DMV, I was instructed to go to the State Police Fraud office to apply for a new vin#. I had to complete an application and get a bond. When I received the new vin#, I had to have it stamped on the tongue of the frame and the axle. Good luck. A lot of effort, time, money and aggravation.
