Brother your going to have a great time! Don't just stick to the lake there are lots of small streams full of trout all over the area. We hit one just outside town with dry flies on ultralight rods and limited out in an hour last time I went!

Beautiful beautiful area, I'd recommend getting a cabin on the lake, I can't remember the company we rented thru but it was only 400$ for 3 days in a 3 bedroom cabin fully stocked, on the water with a hot tub and we split it between some friends to counter the cost...

Also there is a whitewater charter near there for rafting class 1-2 rapids... You don't need a guide and it's not scary at all, you could even take kids on that one... I think that was 35 bucks with a photoshoot included when you hit the "big" rapid. It was a great time. Don't miss that! Yes October will be a bit chilly but that's when we did it! Water temp was like 40 degrees but you only get splashed occasionally so even the women had a blast!

The pic is about the "worst" rapid so you can see it's nothing crazy

You might want to give Cheoah lake and Calderwood lake a try while you are in the area. Lots of trout in both lakes that hold over. Both lakes are remote and should be very scenic in October. Kayak down to that old railroad tunnel on Calderwood. You might be able to paddle through it. Some bizarre rock formations can be seen if the water level is down. If you drink beer have a pint at the Nantahala Brewery in Bryson City. They have some IPA's and wheat beers to die for.

We spent the week of july fourth at a house on the lower end of the lake. We rented a pontoon boat frome here http://www.almondboatpark.com/pontoon-rentals.html#.U_6RuPldWUU and cruised the lower lake and the two rivers at the end of the lake (Nantahala and the little tennesee i believe) Lake is really deep I caught nothing We hired these guys to guide us fly fishing in the park they also do fontana trips http://www.fontanaguides.com/ They put on the trout in the park. Nantahala outdoor center for ziplining and white water rafting http://noc.com/ If you ride MTN bikes some of the best in the USA at Tsali Recreation area. Take a day or two and do something in the GSMNPark We did the hike to clingmans dome I love the area and wish it was closer Enjoy your time out there

I love trout fishing the delayed harvest waters on the Nantahala in the spring. We went there for years. Then work got in the way. There is a campground http://www.nantahalacampground.com/ on the left just past the turn to the power plant, dam and delayed harvest waters. Comfortable place. There is camping and a number of housing options.
