I'm gonna be visiting Oriental with my wife and son on Sept 8. We'll have Saturday mid-afternoon and evening to sightsee (and maybe see some finned, scaly sights). What are some of the things we should make a point of seeing -- and avoiding, if there is such a thing...

We'll be handing out Gatorade at the MS-150 bikeathon -- if anyone is interested in sitting still, hanging out, and handing out snacks to a bunch of athletic lunatics riding enormous distances on their bikes, let me know and I'll be happy to get you plugged in. The route is a figure-eight out of New Bern - northward and eastward on Saturday, northward and westward on Sunday, so all of the rest stops are more or less between New Bern and Washington.

The great thing (to me) about Oriental is that there isn't much to do, just relax. There are a few shops around town and several restaurants a few marinas and some pretty creeks to paddle with your kayak. It is a nice little town for bike riding, walking, etc. Not really anything to avoid that I can think of.

When I go to Oriental I like to stop at Wilbur's in Goldsboro for lunch, the Country Butcher shop for steaks/hamburger/sausage/etc., then Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston. It is kind of a tradition. There are other variations to the routine depending on time of day but those stops make for a pleasant trip to the coast for me.

One of these days I'm going to stay on 70E past New Bern and drop in on Luremaker in Havelock. I could then take the ferry back over to Minnesott beach to get to Oriental. It is a little more work when pulling the boat but I'd love to drop in sometime. You folks heading towards Morehead City and Beaufort should check out Lew's Rod & Reel * 506 E.
