RALEIGH, N.C. (June 9) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hold a public meeting in Burgaw on July 6 to accept comments on a proposed rule to allow hunting by permit only for deer, bear and turkey on a portion of the Bear Garden tract in the Holly Shelter Game Land in Pender County. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pender County Courthouse located at 100 S. Wright Street in downtown Burgaw.

Currently, the Bear Garden tract falls under the same regulations in place throughout Holly Shelter Game Land: Hunting is allowed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and permits are not required.

At their July 13 Commission meeting, wildlife commissioners will review the proposed “Bear Garden Rule” and comments from the July 6 public meeting. If passed, the Bear Garden Rule will take effect in fall of 2006.

The portion of the Bear Garden tract affected by the proposed rule comprises 7,892 acres within the 64,743-acre Holly Shelter Game Land. A free, online map of the Holly Shelter Game Land can be downloaded from the Wildlife Commission’s Web site: http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg04_HuntingTrapping/pg4a3_holly.pdf

For more information, call the Commission’s Wildlife Management Division at (919) 733-7291.
