I caught this 19 incher at Falls lake last night and as excited as I was about it, I couldn't help but be concerned about what is on her left gill. It looks more like a disease than a battle wound or something similar. Does anyone one have an idea of what it might be?

Looks like a lamprey scar.

Looks like a place were some skin got ripped off. I caught one on a big jerkbait once where the back hook got into its back. Caught the same fish a few weeks later in that same area and thats what the spot looked like on it. I see this on a fairly regular basis.

I don't know about up in the lakes in the Piedmont but down east here in the Tar we see that in early spring, its a fungus that gets on the fish here that causes scares like that on the fish, at least that's what a game warden told me.

Could be red spot disease.

Looks like some sort of parasitic lesion. I've seen it on fish coming out of waters with substantial runoff from developed areas.
