Wanted to get to know what the popular way of fishing for winter stripers is. I have fished live bait while trolling as well as fasted artificials. I usually fish kerr and gaston. What are y'all's favorite ways to catch wintertime stripers
I target them on ledges in the Neuse and Trent Rivers. I cast buck tails and soft plastics on jig heads to the shallow side and hop it down the ledge. They usually hit on the fall so it's important to watch your line I'm sure this would work in your area as well.
I know people that have sucess with a tandem rig with 1 bucktail and 1 ice fly at murray in sc. Thats what alot of people use down there. Hopefully i can get some this year.
We used to catch them at Badin by drifting bass minnows. We would put a couple of baits to around 15 feet down, one around 12, and one free lining behind the boat. Worked pretty well.
On that vein, someone told me striper fishing has declined at Badin. Anybody heard anything along that line?
mrbearhunt, which parts of the lake do you think are best for that type of fishing? i usually fish nut bush but have never had any stripers along with the birds, just bait… in nut bush, we catch them casting buck tails on points or trolling with artificials.
this time of yr on Kerr I troll spoons an plugs on leadcore. I troll the channel edges mostly but go out on the flats if there is bait there. also keep a top water popper an a jig of some type rigged on long castin rods. keep ya binocs handy an look for that "white tornado" of birds on bustin fish,
Buddy of mine does pretty good jigging for them with hopkins spoons. I see a bunch of striper fishermen out when I bass fish up at Kerr in the winter.
- Grassy creek between the power lines and the Longwood ramp.
- Clarksville between the bridges
-Nutbush between Satterwhite and Burroughs Mill creek, have also heard of people catching them back around the Nutbush park ramp.
-Little Nutbush around Steele Creek Marina and Townsville Landing
-Main lake in the Ivy Hill area.
Like Neilslure said, we do very well with 3/4oz Hopkins and blade baits. Look for the birds first then the bait, if there are big hooks on the sonar around bait, set directly over top of it and jig vertically.
went out on gaston sat.in the rain following the birds from 8:00-12:00 casting and jigging spoons and silver buddys.between four boats we had all the action we wanted, but those days don't come around often.at least not as often as you would like.
