Looking for some advice...
I started surf fishing a couple of years ago so am still learning the ropes compared to inshore fishing from a boat. My problem is I missed pretty much the entire fall season this year and now that I'm a little less busy, I've been jonesing for a fix, but I've been a couple of times in December and it has been dead. I've read a few articles online that claim you can catch drum in the winter from the surf by being mobile and looking for schools of them, but some of those seemed like they were trying a little too hard to promote guide services/etc. I know when I was younger and my dad had a boat, in the winter we only fished the backs of creeks for trout, who seemed to like mud banks-the "big water" out in the sound was usually dead.
Any thoughts, i.e. is it even worth bothering in the winter? I'd be happy even with some dogfish or other trash/bycatch material. I usually fish Fort Macon or Emerald Isle, although sometimes I go to Hatteras, which is a bit farther. Have not been to Hatteras in a while because of the bridge construction, though.
