Fly Fish Expo this week

The Fly Fishing Expo in Asheville is "just around the next bend in the stream!" It's Dec 5 and 6 at the Ag Center across from the airport on I-26. We'll be doing a booth there again this year (6th year) and are looking forward to a good show with some new presentations and vendors. Check out the details at wncflyfishingexpo.com

Hope to see a bunch of you there.

Wish I could but I am working that week.

Birthdays on the 5th and 6th around here. My name would be mud if I went. Thanks for letting us know anyway.

Work?....Birthdays?...but this is fly fishing.....

You will be missed....but then there is always the Winston show (the biggest in the southeast) coming in Feb. (don't wait until 2016...who knows what the future holds...)

For folks getting started in fly fishing and looking for some basics in casting and tying, the Asheville show is an excellent venue. Smaller scale, not as crowded and a more laid back attitude. There will be several folks happy to show anglers how to get started tying....or work to improve their casting performance...for free. A local fly tying club usually has some tables set up. There will be several folks from the Carolina Fly Fishing Club who will assist with tying and casting fundamentals or advanced technique.

Hopefully I can make Winston, I won't get my 2015 dates for a while, but post a reminder if you think about it.

The Winston show is Feb 6 and 7. The final agenda is not set but the show producer has said that Lefty Kreh, Bob Clouser, Joe Humphreys, Henry Cowen, Beau Beasley etc. etc. will be returning. Stay tuned to theflyfishingshow.com. Good idea Darrell for a M&G before...or maybe even at lunch at the show.

A lot of folks find they can't see it all in a day...if they try to attend the presentations and classes that are offered, and watch all the demos etc. Once the schedule gets published (mid Jan?), it's worth the time in advance to sit down and map out your strategy for seeing everything...if you wait till you get there...it's too late. And some folks go and spend an hour and have seen enough.... If I were able to go as a spectator rather than a vendor, it would take me two days to see all I wanted to... Everytime I watch a demo or presentation by Lefty, Bob, Joe etc.( and I've watched a bunch) I learn something new.

Schedule is a little tighter and slimmer in Asheville, but certainly some good presentations to sit thru there as well. It's a great opportunity to see some new gear; cast some of the high end fly rods to see what you think; and get some quality one-on-one coaching.

Any idea why Dave Whitlock hasn't been going to the fly fishing shows? I have one of his books that I really enjoyed.

Well, I believe Dave was at the last two Winston shows...autographing books etc. and personalizing some of his art. If you buy one of his prints, he will personalize it by adding an additional pencil sketch and your name, at no extra charge. Pretty nice and a lot of folks perhaps don't realize he does that....just ask...or leave the print you purchase with his "assistant" and come back and pick it up.

Last year, or the year before, I don't think he made the Winston show on the first day due to bad weather on the commute to NC...but he was there the second day, as I recall. If you catch him on a fly tying demo or working on a fly, he has always been very willing to show some techniques, tips etc. My tying guru for the store, Mickey Reavis, spent a couple of hours with Whitlock at a show in Charleston...soaking up the knowlege and experience.

Whitlock and a lot of the other "greats" are even older than us (hard to believe I know) by quite a few years....so now's the time to say hello; pick up a piece of art; have them autograph a book etc. The Winston show can pull in the big names for a variety of reasons.....Asheville?..not so much...but a lot of local, regional knowledge to be had.

Dave did that with the book I bought from him. He wasn't at the last show I went to in Raleigh.
Days have passed rapidly from the original "3 week" and now we are heading to the Fly Fishing Expo in only about 3 days!....

The store in Statesville will be closed Dec. 4-6. We'll set up our booth in Asheville on the 4th and the Fly Fishing Expo opens to the public on Friday Dec. 5...and again on the 6th. Normal store hours in Statesville will resume on the following Tuesday.

I'm hoping to attend the Winston show maybe. I hope you'll keep us reminded when the date draws closer.
