man,, without my boat,, water levels at the lakes crazy.. and the lack luster desire to fish offshore due to bad weather not to mention no boat... has kept me away a little more from the site here... but, I got myself into somethin else and thought I'd pass it along as this is the scuttle buttin section.

I'm not one to advocate breaking the law.. so wanted to say that first.
But back in my glory days,, we used to have them things called "fuzz busters".
Dont ask me why.. but I've been really into them.. and enjoy these little devices.

Back in the day,, I at one time or another had a Fuzz buster (big ol black box with faux wood panel front, one huge light and a knob. ha ha hah a.... looked like an extention cable coming out of it to plug into the dash board cigarette lighter recepticle on the dash of my 1975 Monte Carlo.

Thing didnt work for spit.. but loved it anyway... maybe I thought it was cool... either way.. it was my first introduction to the "ticket detector":p

After that, I had one of them ones from Radio shack, the Cobra Bear.. or somethin like that... then around 1983/84 Cincinati Microwave came out with the superhetrodyne Escort. Back then, $200 was a lot of money for a toy such as a radar detector. Never could afford one in that price range... then I ended up with one of the FOX XY radar detectors (looked cool as all get out.. but again,, was nothing but a "ticket detector". Two big long plastic lookin antenna things stickin out.. must of been the perceived cool factor thing..

Then I started to get a little serious, when Beltronics came out with detectors that "actually warned you ahead of time"... at least gave you a chance to hit the break peddle before you knew you were about to get a ticket. ha ha ha ha aha.... :)

got a Beltronics Vantage 3 that could pick up all 3 radar bands, X, K and the newest one out KA. Radar detection was still distant and off in the future. That little sucker was 4 times smaller than them big box Escorts, then Escort sized down the big unit to the Escort Passport. Them things sold like hot cakes! Valentine wasnt even considered or an option until after the demise of Escort, and when Beltronics purchased Escort/CMI.

Anyway.. couldnt afford a $400 Valentine neither.. so I stuck around with low budget/decent warning Beltronics. I still have in my little truck, the Bel Vantage 3 I had purchased some 18-19 years ago!!! and it still works.. which in itself is amazing..
about 10 years ago, I picked up a Bel 820... Oooohh... newer technology!! Wow, and didnt false as much.. could actually ride by a grocery store and not get overwhelmed by X band radar pickups!!! This is COOL!! now I even had,,, hold on for this one... LASER detection capability!!:D and the new SWS (Safety Warning System to alert of road safety info and such...).

Do I drive like a mad man? no... Have the detector's save me from a ticket or two? yep.. I run a little over every now an then (especially when gas prices where down and might be in a little hurry to start that vacation and get on the road to make good time). Have I got zapped? sure have! Vantage 3 let me down once on Bragg blvd from that sneaky cop sittin under the overpass with that dreaded instant on and once coming back on 421 south of Greensboro (coming back late one night knowing the wife was gonna be hot cause I was 2 hours too late from the time I said I'd be home....)

But for the most part, I enjoy the detectors as they do make you check your speed when it goes off... and that's a nice reminder to straighten up and get in line.. but I dont use one for going 120 mph and hope not to get caught... that's just foolish.
But I'm intrigued with them and dont know why.... just like the fishin thing... something I enjoy.

Well,, I'm proud to say.. I'm now an owner of an original Cincinati Microwave Escort superhetrodyne unit. Funny.... I can now afford one.. even if I got it off Ebay for $9!! ha ha haha..... (my first ebay purchase too by the way.... boy times are a changin!!):D:rolleyes:

But now.. I've got this stinkin Detector fetish!!!! I still have my old Bel Vantage, Bel 820, now my prized Escort (even though it's 80's tech.. I dont care!) :) and I've even got an old somethin or other in the attic that isnt even good enough for a paper weight! My friend has been hinting of upgrading his Escort Passport 5000 with something newer and I offered to buy it from him... I got a bid in on a Escort Passport (yup, the vintage original - with case, plug, manual... etc...) for like a rediculous amount of $10.. jeez.. I remember when folks would bust yer vehicle apart to get one of these... now they're nothing but a faded memory...

But I find myself still intrigued with them and now I've started collecting them. Even plan to purchase the new 9000i Escort Passport that's out... the latest and greatest!! must be the cool factor again... and probably just another ticket detector..:D

Anyway.. thought I'd share that.. and for any afeciando's out there like me that have the detector bug too... here's a place to get your detector fix: Radar detector jammer forum: Index what's funny is... these kids now days,, talk exactly like we did back then about this stuff.... it is entertaining. Difference is.. we didnt have internet... so we had to meet up at the beach parkin lot or downtown by the ball courts to spend senseless hours talkin about that kind of stuff and not to mention,, show off any car motor modifications....

But anyway... thought I'd bring back a blast from the past and my wife reacted pretty much like old girlfriends did back then... "who cares/so what" :)... I guess with all the things that change... some dont! ;)

If interested, here's a link to the Ticket detector museum: The Radar Detector Museum

I'm an ex trucker (among other things..LOL). You should see the creative genius some guys have to hide those things in a commercial vehicle because in some states they are illegal..

It's funny... it's always been a cat/mouse game... Radar detector detectors (RDD's) and VG2 to defeat the RDD's... ha ha ha ha.... Yup, Illegal in Virginia. Bud of mine told me he got stopped because he had his RD (radar detector) on. VA cop didnt want to hear it... $50 ticket whamo. He said he'd just crossed the border too from NC to VA.

It's been confirmed as well NCHP has lazer especially around Greensboro and Raleigh, as well as K and Ka wideband. X isnt as prevalant,, but still around. VASCAR is also another method used around Charlotte/Winston/Raleigh and Wilmington. Photo radar isnt used as much as other states here in NC, but the most deadly on a speeding motorist would be the wide band Ka and Ka instant on.

I never thought I'd say this.. but gone are them good ol' days of X constant on "smokey and the bandit days"... ha ha hahah a..... :) what's neat is the sub culture of hunter and hunted still continues...

Now it's all anti reflective coatings, lazer jammers (some of which are pretty affective, but very pricey), very high and compact technology one up's manship... but nothin still beats the eye balls and that second sense of what's goin on around you. What's even funnier is the guy/gal that relies on one of these gadgets... new fangled this that and the other... then smokey pulls out the ol' trusty X band slow pulser and nabs 'em!!! ha ha ha ha....

Ah.. still cant believe I got an original Escort CMI ($9 mind you!!)... brings back alot of memories, and even crazier is it still works like a champ even if it is obsolete to a "certain" extent! ;) with a RD, CB, and paying some sort of attention,, usually you can tell when County Mounty/Smokey Bear is out there! ;)

Uhh... what can I say.. pretty bored not havin a boat around!
Got me another "flea bay" Escort today for $20... at least now I have a complete "original" vintage set-up! (finally scored one with an owner manual and the other original accesories! HA!).

They have the earliest model Escort from CMI that comes with a plastic "how to" 45 rmp record (yup,, you heard me right... 45 record!)... how I'd play it... that I dont know... as I got rid of the last of my vinyl collection last year and worn out turn table.
Maybe I shoulda kept that Beetles White albulm though....
