Jig heads

Does is matter what type of jig head you use for artificial baits. I looked and there are round ones, flat ones, stand up, lay down, roll over,,,, you name it. I will probably be using the Gulp shrimp or jerk type baits. I'm just curious if it really matters. I know that around here the Bass fishermen are fanatics about certain types of heads.

I commented in another post about making your own jigheads that may be useful for you, but here's my opinion.

I used to only use roundheaded jigheads, but I target flounder a lot of the time and bounce baits off the bottom. Round heads became problematic because the tended to lodge them in between snags/oyster rocks on the bottom. I have switch to a knife-edged type. The best way I could describe it is a quarter circle/oval shape that's thicker on the top & back an tapers to an edge on the rounded side. The eye is located on the top of head as opposed to the front. Since using these, I get snagged a lot less and when snagged I pull free easier. Sorry I don't have picture to show.

I also use a fishead shaped jig head made by Saltwater Assassin, but of the ones I've found, bought and used, I am starting to think the hook size is too large. All that was available at the time, I think, were a 2/0, but I liked the shape, color and extra barb to hold the bait in place.

Venom's right on! It's a Bass Assassin, Saltwater Assassin jighead (in Electric Chicken, no less), but I haven't seen 'em at Wallyworld. I'll have to check that out. I believe I picked up a couple backs from the Neuse in Kinston, but there was a limited size available. Like I said above, I think the ones I got were 2/0. I have not had many hang-ups with them, but I have had a lot of missed strikes and bite-offs by blues. I think the hook is just too big.

If anybody sees any in smaller sizes, I'd like to hear about. Thanks!

PH, the one in Havelock has them by the dozen(or did) 3 days ago. I think they was 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8oz. I will check again when I get back there on Sat. Not sure about hook size but look to be around 2/0-3/0.

Blues have a tendency to hit right behind the hook, doesn't matter what
size of rig you use....:)

Dozens of assorted styles on the market. Check out several styles in the 1/4 ounce
which is propably the most used and see what action you like for your jigs.
