I went out to Simpkins Pond last weekend to try to catch some bass. I was there for nearly three hours and didn't get a single bite. My friend who was with me caught several catfish on nightcrawlers. I was wondering if anyone has ever caught any bass out there. That was my first time there and will probably be my last time. The pond got really crowded in the afternoon with people. Kids were throwing rocks and sticks into the water, and the grown ups were leaving trash everywhere and cussing like sailors.

Simpkins Pond at Lake Wheeler
Like many places open to the public,overfishing,trash and" loving" it to death are all contributors.Many years ago There were bass and some highwater periods allowed lake fish to replenish from time to time.there was a bass over 12 lbs. landed there and weighed and displayed at Thorne's Hardware (long gone).It allegedly swallowed a crappie that was pretty big itself.The crappie's tail was still sticking in the gullet in the store.For a long time it was pretty easy to catch some small bass and crappie there.That was a long time ago.I've not been there in 20 years but it was silted and trashed then.
Has anybody caught any trout in Simpkins pond?? I was just curious as I've seen a few videos in recent years of people catching nice size trout there on YouTube.
Checkout the NCWRC site for when they stock it with trout. Not sure they do every Spring but have in the past.
