Well I got a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 3000 today for both inshore lure and jig fishing around Oak ICW and also some freshwater bass fishing in the upstate. I think I plan to run some 10lb braided line on it but I need to choose me a rod. I've fished spinning reels before but this will be my first one. I don't want junk and I want my best bang for the buck but want to keep the price below $150. I think I want a medium with fast action but I don't know about length. I will be mainly doing bank/pier fishing for now (hopefully boat later) but was thinking either a 6'6" or a 7'. Would like to hear opinions on length and brand/type rod.

Right now I'm really looking at the St. Croix Triumph

I love my St Croix rods. Super durable, great casting, and fights fish with a solid backbone.
I have a 6'6" Triumph X and a 7' Triumph. They are my most used rod, behind my fly rod. They are pretty good casting into the wind, good flex to get the lure moving.
I recommend them, two thumbs up from me!

Yea I'm pretty dead set of St Croix from all the reviews and research I've been doing. But I'm honestly wondering if I should get the Triumph or just go for the Mojo. I like the Mojo Inshore although I don't think it comes in a 6'6". I will be mainly doing top water and some twitchbaits so I don't think I want a really long rod, maybe even a 6'?!

Oh and I think I want a 1 piece because while using the father-in-law's setup I sent the last half of his rod flying with the lure on a cast.

Fenwick or Star have 'truth' lifetime guarantees, not partial or mail it back types.
Just bring it back to the tackle shop for a replacement.
Differently get a one piece rod in 7'. Shorter 6'6" are for precision casting around docks.

Good choice going with 19# braid.
Hope this helps..... ICM

I bought a Fenwick Eagle combo from Dick’s last Feb and the rod broke just above the handle last week. Dick’s would not process the warranty but Purfishing did. Sent pictures of breakage and receipt and will be getting a new rod soon.
I own 5 Fenwick rods and really like them. The 7’ medium lite/fast is really sensitive and the medium 6’6” and 7’ medium/fast are strong. Each is paired with 20-35 size reel.

I own a 7 foot st croix premier medium with a okuma av30 and love it more than the 7 foot med light st croix with a 2500 series reel(forget what brand cause i never fish with it much)

It was a difficult decision but it was well worth it when i was catching fish and the other guy couldnt cast as far and wasnt catching anything

If I needed another rod, i wouldn't hesitate in grabbing a triumph 7 foot medium

It also works well for jigging in the surf

Well somehow I finally found a Avid X 6'6 MF 1 piece in stock. Place had 1 left and was asking $219.99 with free shipping. They accepted offers so I shot low (Why not? I'd still have bought it at $220). I offered $185 shipped and they took it! So now it is on the way.

Lets just hope it gets here by next Thursday so I can use it Friday on the NC coast again.

Inshore for reds and specks and for bank fishing, you will appreciate the longer rod. For later in the boat, the shorter rod will be easier to handle, safer for a fishing partner, and easier to store. Otherwise, I think you are planning your purchases pretty well, and getting good advice from the others on this site. Tight lines!!

I had my CI4 3000 on a St Croix Avid 7' VIS70MF but I never thought it casted all that well. I just switched it over to a Star Seagis split grip 6'6" 6-14lb rating (SK614FT66G) and I love it. I really wanted the full grip but my local shop (Dave's Outpost in Sunset Beach) was out of them and said it would take 6 weeks to get b/c of the shortage of rods and tackle so I went with the split they had in stock. I primarily wanted a really light setup for topwater and throwing soft plastics and I think this is a great setup for that. I put a Stradic 3000FJ on the St Croix and it casts a mile and I really like that setup as well. I've got both of those reels strung with 15" PowerPro. I ended up going with the Seagis 6'6" after talking to one of the local guides, he gave me some good advice about pairing. He also touted the Star over-the-counter warranty as did the folks at Dave's. For $150 I'd give the Seagis a hard look.

I got it put together yesterday. Avid X rod is ridiculously light as expected and the overall balance is nice. I'm very excited to use it this coming Friday in the ICW. Hopefully I can report that I caught SOMETHING. So far my tackle is...

1/4 gold Johnson weedless spoon
17MR Mirrolure in EC and 808 color
Yo-Zuri 3D inshore gold/black twitchbait
Rapala X-Rap in Clown color and also Hot head
Rapala X-Rap popper in Clown
Heddon Super Spook Jr in Bone

I feel like I need some dark color baits but selection is slim pickings right now. I can't even find any Z-Man Trout Tricks, I really want to try a soft swimbait.
